Jennifer Hudson is in the spotlight, to borrow the title of her 2008 hit song. At the 2022 Tonys on Sunday (June 12), Hudson became the 17th person to achieve EGOT status. She won as one of my producers strange episodeWhich got the title of best music.
At 40 years and nine months old, Hudson is EGOT’s third youngest person. Only Robert Lopez (who was 39 when he completed the awards sweep) and John Legend (who was 39 years and eight months) were younger. Furthermore, Hudson is just the third Black EGOT, after Whoopi Goldberg and Legend.
Hudson took her first step towards EGOT in 2007 when she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her first feature film, dream girls. She landed second in 2009 when she won a Grammy for Best R&B Album for her eponymous debut album. (She won her second Grammy Award after eight years as a performer in a revival Violetwhich won Best Theatrical Musical Album.)
Hudson was never nominated for a Primetime Emmy, but she received a Daytime Emmy in 2021 as executive producer for Baba Yaga. The VR animated movie won great interactive media for a daytime programme.
Similarly, Hudson was never nominated for a Tony Award as an actor. She was crossed for a nod in 2016 for her role Violet. But it won this year as one of 44 individuals or entities to receive product credit strange episode.
This is not a typo (full list below if you find it hard to believe). This points to a problem that has arisen in the EGOT phenomenon – standards are inconsistent from offer to offer and in some cases are too lax. To produce a musical that wins Tony for Best Music, or to co-produce it with a reasonable number of other people, it must count fully towards EGOT status. But when 44 individuals or entities win as producers, it makes us wonder how much creative involvement they can each get.
Hudson is the third representative of EGOT in which only Tony was one of a group of producers – although previous groups were modest in size compared to strange episode. Goldberg won in 2002 as one of the 11 producers of totally modern millie, Voted as the best music. Legend won in 2017 as one of eight producers of Jitney August Wilsonwhich won for best revival of the play.
Perhaps there should be a limit to the number of producers who can win prizes on a given project. It’s hard to pick a number – should it be four, six, eight, 10? I think we can all agree that the number 44 is a very large number.
Here’s the thing: There are 25 people alive who just need Tony to become EGOT. The list includes top talents such as Julie Andrews, Burt Bacharach, Cher, Common, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Randy Newman, Trent Resnor, Atticus Ross, Martin Scorsese, Barbra Streisand, John Williams and Kate Winslet. Apparently, all they have to do is tell their agents that they want to start investing in projects with potential prizes. If they have good instincts and connections, one of these projects is sure to win.
This is not to undermine Hudson’s achievements. The current rules for who wins when a show wins a Tony or Emmy (or when an album wins a Grammy for Album of the Year, for that matter) are very lenient, but they didn’t write the rules. She definitely has the talent to become an EGOT as an artist one day. Let’s hope you do.
Do you want to know how many of the 17 EGOT winners have won the 4 awards as performers? Only four are Helen Hayes, Rita Moreno, John Gielgud and Audrey Hepburn.
Postscript: Hudson is the first person to rise to the top American Idol to EGOT. She was a contestant on the third season of this long-running show. This is one place you haven’t won. It came in sixth place. She did not let this disappointment stop her.
strange episode He only won two awards, less than expected. Michael R. Jackson, the musical dramatist, won the Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama in 2020.
Ariana Debos hosted the 75th Annual Tony Awards from Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
