Roswell, New MexicoSeason 4 wasn’t supposed to be the final season, but based on the events of Monday’s premiere, you’ve thought that was the plan all along.
Not only do everyone’s favorite small-town counterparts stand at a life-changing crossroads – including Max and Lise’s (almost!) participation – but three new extraterrestrial villains introduced at the premiere plan to star in The Descent, an event The show has shown great dread in the past few seasons. “This year we wanted to define what a landing actually is,” executive producer Christopher Holler told TVLine.
Houllier can’t say more about getting off just yet, but he promises the show will be doing it for him pretty soon. Meanwhile, a lot has happened RoswellThe main characters in the six months since we last saw them.
“What we decided last year was that they were all brought up, so the question now is what they were brought up with,” Hollier says. We wanted the characters, especially Liz, to settle in for their happiness, only to have them itch again.”
Read on for the full Q&A with Holler, including insight into (many!) emotional turmoil this week:
TVLINE | Well, let’s talk about Liz and Max. How long are you going to make us wait for this proposal to happen for real?
Well, look, that’s a big thing for people this age. They started pairing up, they started moving together, and we’re looking at all those steps. We know that [the proposal is] Carrot, something that is treated objectively and in different ways.
TVLINE | I appreciate how clueless he was about the process, every step of the way.
He is a cowboy. As a species, we’re not very smart.
TVLINE | I also appreciate knowing that Sherry Appleby plays Liz’s mentor. This seems appropriate.
Yes, I loved working with Sherry. She is full of creativity and directness. I’m excited for fans to delve into this.
TVLINE | Seeing it on the back of the book was nice, but when are we ever going to be Dr. Allie Myers in the flesh again?
“In the flesh” may be giving too much. We do a lot of weird things on this show. I would say looking for it early is a different way than you might expect.
TVLINE | And based on our brief encounter with her last season, is it safe to say that she’s familiar with aliens?
Yes, she knows enough to play in the basin of our story.
TVLINE | Isobel and Anatsa are my new favorite couple. Was she about to pour in the weird beans before they got distracted?
Yes, it would have been clean. That’s what we wanted to weigh her in in a pretty cool way. When do you tell someone your secret? When do you really start letting someone in? Saying “I love you” comes with a lot.
TVLINE | I also enjoy watching Michael and Alex awkwardly try to blend their lives. Will that be an ongoing struggle for them?
We’re actually going to explore this couple in a very unusual way. I would argue that this episode doesn’t really touch on what their story is, but it does set the table for where they are and how they developed emotionally. They are two people who now know they are in love. They know they want to be together. But just because you want something, doesn’t mean it’s an easy path. We have big plans for them, but we won’t give anything away in Episode 1.
TVLINE | Alex was very comfortable about that tree. I don’t know if I will respond calmly.
[Laughs] No, I would have lost it. But that’s how much he loves Michael, come on.
TVLINE | And what about Maria? She mentioned that she was still dating Gregory, but I definitely sensed the chemistry between her and Dallas.
I mean, when you have good people like them, they screw up the chemistry. It’s something that we hope fans will track down and influence. I’m curious how people feel about their interactions.
TVLINE | At least she is in good medical condition.
She’s on the rise, but that was her superpowers. Do you really want to lose it? This is something we will play with.
TVLINE | I know the CW gave you a warning at some point that you might want to end things. Do you expect fans to be satisfied with the temporary ending?
I think so. It was built knowing it could be the end. But it also leaves room for more, so I hope they call me for a reboot one day.
